October 30th 2024
A completely new watch line from Patek Philippe is always a great moment. This October, the time had come: the first editions of the ‘Cubtitus’ were presented.
The last family-owned watch manufacturer in Geneva has thus expanded its already brilliant range of luxury watches with a completely new collection that impresses us with its unique combination of boldness and elegance. This watch combines the instantaneous jumping displays of big date, day of the week and moon phase in a new way. To achieve this, the watchmakers at Patek Philippe equipped the legendary Caliber 240 with a highly original square case with rounded corners. The large date in the double window, which is useful in everyday use, harmonizes perfectly with the geometry of the case and dial.
And with its dial decorated in horizontal relief embossing, the new Cubitus celebrates its debut in three attractive versions, all of which are real character pieces. The more technical platinum model ‘Cubitus Instantaneous Grand Date, Day & Moon Phases’ (reference 5822P-001) is powered by a new movement with an instantaneous display, for which six patents have been filed. We are also impressed by the vintage touch of the two-tone Cubitus model (reference 5821/1AR-001) in steel and red gold with a blue sunburst dial. The third in the group is the sporty version in steel (reference 5821/1A-001), whose olive green sunburst dial offers a little more understatement and guarantees a grand entrance both on the golf course and in the marina.
A new metamorphosis for the legendary Caliber 240
To enable a flat design despite the high mechanical complexity, the engineers were inspired by the ultra-flat automatic caliber 240 with automatic winding and mini-rotor. Launched in 1977, this classic has established itself as a cult movement thanks to its thinness, reliability and performance. It is fitted in many models in the current collection. Among other things, it has been performing its reliable work in the Nautilus models with the reference 5712 since 2006. In the new Cubitus reference 5822P-001, in addition to the large date at 12 o’clock and a small second at 4.30
a coaxial double display of the day of the week by hand and moon phase in the sub-dial at 7 o’clock. This is how the new caliber 240 PS CI J LU with automatic winding was created. It requires a total of 353 components! The perfect combination of tradition and innovation. Despite the 104 additional
components, the movement is only 0.77 mm taller than the legendary caliber 240 PS IRM C LU (4.76 mm compared to 3.99 mm). The basic movement has been reworked with an instantaneous jumping calendar mechanism with a large date.
Simultaneous display jumps in 18 milliseconds
An important criterion for a large date is the best possible readability. The watchmakers at Patek Philippe wanted to avoid time deviations when changing the various displays on a daily basis. The manufacture has therefore developed a new mechanism. This allows the large date, the day of the week and the moon phase to change simultaneously and instantaneously to the new day.
day. All these processes are controlled by a large rocker that drives the 24-hour wheel. This wheel carries a cam that continuously winds the large rocker during the course of the day. As soon as midnight is reached, the beak of the large see-saw falls from the tip of the cam thanks to a strong spring. This movement causes the large see-saw to pull one tooth of the date star by means of several other components.
one tooth of the date star, one tooth of the day star and one tooth of the moon phase star into the new position and this mechanism causes the displays to change instantaneously. Thanks to the energy stored over the course of the day, all of these displays jump instantly and simultaneously within 18 milliseconds every day at midnight.
Six patented technical innovations
These and many other challenges prompted the engineers at Patek Philippe to develop new technical solutions. They subsequently led to six specific patent applications. In particular, the innovations ensure that the numerals of the large date in the two windows are always perfectly aligned at the same height. Furthermore, when the date changes from 31 to 01 or in the event of shocks and vibrations, there are no double jumps in the tens. And
all displays (including the time and day of the week) can be corrected manually at any time of day without damaging the movement or changing the displays! These innovations have optimized the reliability, readability and user-friendliness of the various functions.
The movement has three correctors integrated into the case flank for the date, day of the week and moon phase. As this is a simple calendar, the timepiece must be corrected on the first day of March, May, July, October and December. The moon phase display is so accurate that it only deviates from the actual lunar cycle by a single day after 122 years. This dizzying accuracy of the new caliber exceeds the tolerance range of [-1
This dizzying accuracy of the new caliber exceeds the even stricter precision criteria of the manufacture with a tolerance range of [-1; +2] s/24h. Patek Philippe officially announced this strict standard in spring 2024. Of course, the movement also meets all other requirements of the incorruptible Patek Philippe seal.
The noblesse of platinum
The new Cubitus case in platinum has a two-part construction with integrated lugs. integrated lugs, a diameter of 45 mm and a height of 9.6 mm. The square design with rounded corners emphasizes the contrast of different surfaces different surfaces: The flat side of the bezel and the top of the case bear vertical satin-brushing, while the bevels of the bezel and flanks are polished. Like all Patek Philippe platinum models, the new reference 5822P-001 is set with a diamond, for the first time with a baguette diamond set on the bezel at 6 o’clock. The transparent sapphire crystal case back provides a clear view of the new calibre 240 PS CI J LU with its decentralized mini-rotor in 22-carat gold. It bears the same decoration of horizontal lines as the dial: the signature of the Cubitus models.
The modern, technical and elegant style of the watch is emphasized by a strap made of particularly navy blue composite material with a textile pattern and ecru-colored contrast stitching. The platinum folding clasp is engraved with the name of the Cubitus collection. Patek Philippe also offers new Cubitus cufflinks in the collection to match the watch.
