24. May 2024
On June 5, Hollywood legend Sylvester (‘Sly’) Stallone will be auctioning off a fraction of his own watch collection at Sotheby’s auction house. Among the eleven timepieces is an extremely rare Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, which was originally sold for around 2.5 million dollars.
The ›Grandmaster Chime‹ is the most complicated watch that Patek Philippe has ever built. It contains 20 complications on both sides of the case with a reversible mechanism. These include a second time zone, a day/night indicator for the second time zone, a perpetual calendar, five chime functions and two world firsts: the alarm with programmed chime and a date repeater that also strikes the date on demand. This ultimate watch was launched in 2014 to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the manufactory. Today, as Ref. 6300, it is an elementary part of Patek Philippe’s core collection: an exceptional timepiece with seven patents registered for it and innovations on two separate dials. To date, only 7 of these have ever been produced!
Rumor has it that the prestigious auction house Sotheby’s will set a starting price of 2.5 to 5 million dollars for the auction of Silvester Stallone’s Grandmaster Chime. However, we will hardly be surprised if this gem changes hands for a significantly higher price. In 2019, a model from this series was auctioned off at the ›Only Watch‹ charity auction for an incredible 31 million francs, making it the most expensive wristwatch in the world – and it was ›only‹ made of stainless steel.
Stallone’s model is made of white gold and comes in an elaborate presentation box. It contains matching cufflinks, a plaque with Stallone’s name, the original certificate of course, the Grandmaster Chime book, which is a collector’s item itself, and an iPad with a Patek Philippe leather case. Incidentally, Sly’s Grandmaster is still in its original packaging! The action star claims to have bought it deliberately as a collector’s item, with no intention of ever wearing it on his strong arm. It was not easy even for him to get hold of the precious piece. He had to approach the highest levels of the company. »I’ve been a client and enthusiast of Patek Philippe for many years«, said Stallone. Nevertheless, his Grandmaster Chime must now go. We are looking forward to see who is going to get hold of it.
