Elegance, perfection and style – the Parisian luxury brand Hermès has long lived up to these standards. In addition to prêt-à-porter fashion, its renowned silk scarves, perfumes and fine leather goods for which Hermès is world famous, Hermès has been manufacturing its own timepieces since 1912. Based in Switzerland, La Montre Hermes has also been producing its own manufacture movements, precise and stylish, since 2012. Because of the brand’s historical connection to saddlery, Hermès watches feature straps made of luxurious leather, so soft they flatter. Just like its other fine products, Hermès watches are tantamount to luxury and the very highest quality.
It all began in the Hermès family. A family photograph from 1912 shows Emile Hermès with his four children. At that time, no one suspected that the watch ‘Porte-Oignon’, of his daughter, Jaqueline, would one day represent the link between saddlery and watchmaking. The first step on the road to becoming watch manufacturer Hermès. ‘Porte-Oignon’ – which can be translated as ‘Onion Principle’ -, was a special creation for Emile’s daughter. This pocket watch model was to be worn on the wrist with a fine leather strap as a delicate feminine touch, and would make it easier for her to tell the time while riding. There are numerous legends surrounding the invention of the wristwatch, and many noble manufacturers claim it as their own, but we like this version from Hermès’ family history the best.
