With the new Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Chronograph 5924G, Patek Philippe once again impressively demonstrates how sporty aesthetics and technical sophistication can be combined in a watch. The new reference, originally introduced in 2023, is also the first in the pilot collection from the last family-owned watch manufacturer in Geneva to combine a flyback chronograph with the proven travel time function. A truly difficult complication to master for discerning watch lovers and stylish globetrotters.
The striking white gold case measures a virile 42 millimetres, yet conveys a balanced presence on the wrist. There are two dial options to choose from: a cool, sun-kissed blue-grey paired with a navy blue leather strap, or a distinctive khaki green paired with an olive green strap. Both models feature a vintage finish and a clevis clasp. The aeronautical design of the watch itself is, of course, inspired by classic pilot accessories.
The displays on this watch are correspondingly clearly structured and intuitive to read: two central hour hands show either local time or home time, with one of the hands being skeletonised. Day/night indicators for both time zones are neatly housed in small windows and provide additional orientation. The date is elegantly displayed on a subdial at twelve o’clock, naturally linked to the local time. And at the bottom of the dial is the 60-minute counter of the flyback chronograph, whose central seconds display adds the finishing touch to the dynamic effect of this watch face.
Let’s take a look at the inner workings: inside, the automatic calibre CH 28-520 C FUS performs its unwavering counting function. At Juwelier Oberleitner, we are very impressed by how this model combines chronograph expertise and travel suitability. The flyback function allows the running chronograph to be reset to zero and restarted immediately with a single push of a button. This function was originally developed for pilots. Just think of display failures, which used to happen more frequently in the past. Such a watch can take over essential functions such as a fuel gauge if the pilot knows the hourly fuel consumption of his engines. The local time, on the other hand, can be conveniently adjusted using newly designed, enlarged correctors at eight and ten o’clock with an enclosed push pin, which blends stylishly into the elegant case design.
With this new release, Patek Philippe remains true to its philosophy: combining the highest level of watchmaking craftsmanship with a design that combines technical prowess with stylistic clarity. The Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Chronograph 5924G not only replaces older models in this line, but also ushers in a new generation.
